Daylight system or roof window: the difference

DaylightReading time: 4 minutesUpdated: September 2026

If you want light in a dark bathroom, hallway or storeroom, two solutions come into view: a roof window or a daylight system with a mirrored tube. They appear to do the same thing, but in practice they are very different.

1. The difference in construction

A roof window needs an opening in the roof structure and therefore alteration of the rafters. A light tube goes through a much smaller opening and can be routed around obstacles, right into a room that is not directly under the roof. Installation is relatively simple and needs no change to your roof structure.

2. The difference in light and heat

A roof window gives a view and fresh air, but also heat in summer and heat loss in winter. A light tube gives light only: true-colour daylight spread evenly through the room by the diffuser, without a harsh patch of sun and without significant heat loss.

  • Roof window: view and ventilation
  • Light tube: light only, no heat loss
  • A tube can be routed around obstacles
  • No change to the roof structure

3. Where we advise which solution

For an attic room where you want a view and ventilation, a roof window makes sense. For a bathroom, toilet, storage cupboard, hallway or workplace without an outside wall we advise a daylight system. We work with Lightway, with a glass dome and diffuser and a bonded mirror layer, with a 25-year warranty on the mirrored section.

In practice this subject belongs with zone control and heat pumps. There you can read how we work and what is possible, or you can request a no-obligation quote straight away.
