Installing solar panels: avoid the risks, choose an expert

SafetyReading time: 4 minutesUpdated: September 2026

The quality of solar installations that consumers fit on their own roofs is often poor. In a number of cases they have even caused house fires. A badly installed solar system can cause serious problems. So we say it again: always choose an experienced installer to avoid problems with unpleasant consequences.

1. More house fires through incorrect installation

The figures show that the number of house fires rose sharply in recent years. The exact cause is not always fully clear, but several experts point to solar panels wrongly installed by the do-it-yourself fitter. The rules that form the basic conditions for a safe installation are often not followed.

The result is often the wrong use of materials and careless finishing of the installation. It may look harmless, but it is not: electricity has to be handled carefully, certainly on a roof you live under every day.

2. Always choose an experienced installer

With solar panels you become your own energy supplier. The sun shines on a series of connected panels through which current flows, and the inverter converts that into usable power. In short: a fairly complex process that demands a precise and safe installation.

For years now our installers have been the right people for this. We work with the right materials, stick to the rules and know what we are doing. If you plan to generate your own electricity, leave the installation to a professional.

  • Ask about the materials and brands used
  • Have the installation assessed on site beforehand
  • Check whether the engineers are in-house
  • Ask how registration with the grid operator is handled

3. How to recognise a good installer

A good installer comes to look first, takes measurements and does the sums. They tell you which materials they use and why, show how the cabling and roof penetration are finished and explain how the system is registered. If you are offered a standard package without anyone having seen your roof, be careful.

In practice this subject belongs with advice and design and solar panels. There you can read how we work and what is possible, or you can request a no-obligation quote straight away.

Tip from the engineer

When in doubt, always ask for a no-obligation advice session. Half an hour of looking on site says more than ten brochures, and you commit to nothing.
