Smart ways to use sunlight

Besides solar panels there are more ways to turn sunlight and heat into sustainable energy at home. Solar collectors and combi boilers, for example. You can also simply make smart use of sunlight when building or renovating.

1. Solar energy is endlessly available

In the Netherlands the sun shines enough for solar water heaters and solar panels to work. Using solar energy also releases hardly any polluting substances such as CO2. That is what makes solar energy sustainable.

2. Power, hot water or both

Generating power from sunlight is done with solar panels on the roof. Heating tap water with solar warmth is done with a solar water heater and collectors, which also sit on a roof. A combi model heats your home as well as your tap water.

3. Building towards the sun and letting daylight in

A simple way to use sunlight for heating is to build or renovate towards the sun. Add a conservatory or an extra window on the south side, for instance. For rooms without an outside wall a daylight system is a smart solution: a tube with a mirrored inside brings real daylight into a bathroom or storeroom without using a single watt.
