Going green in steps: where do you start?

AdviceReading time: 4 minutesUpdated: September 2026

Tackling everything at once is not an option for most households, and it does not need to be. There is an order that delivers most per euro invested in almost any home. We go through it with you during the energy advice session.

1. Step 1: know where your energy goes

Do not start by buying but by measuring. Our energy coach inspects your home or premises on site and shows where the biggest consumers are. That prevents you from investing in a solution to a problem you do not have.

2. Step 2: the cheap measures first

LED lighting, a well-adjusted system and an air and dirt separator in the heating water cost little and pay for themselves within a few years. Clean heating water uses about 7 percent less energy, and de-aerated water up to 6 percent less again. Those are the easiest savings there are.

  • Measure first, buy later
  • LED and clean system water pay back quickly
  • Solar panels: 6 to 12 percent return
  • A heat pump when the home is ready for it

3. Step 3: generate your own power

Solar panels are the logical next step: the return is between 6 and 12 percent and the installation is done in a day. Include monitoring straight away so you see from day one what the system is doing.

4. Step 4: tackle the heating

Only once the home holds on to heat and you generate your own electricity is a heat pump really in its place. Start hybrid if you like, keeping your boiler, and complete the system later with zone control and a buffer tank. That way you go green step by step, without an investment you would later regret.

In practice this subject belongs with energy advice and solar water heaters. There you can read how we work and what is possible, or you can request a no-obligation quote straight away.

Tip from the engineer

When in doubt, always ask for a no-obligation advice session. Half an hour of looking on site says more than ten brochures, and you commit to nothing.
