How many solar panels fit on my roof?

CostsReading time: 4 minutesUpdated: September 2026

It is one of the first questions we get: how many panels actually fit on my roof? The honest answer is that it differs per house. In this article we explain which factors play a part, so you can make a good estimate yourself before we visit.

1. The size of the roof surface is the starting point

A common panel is around 1.70 by 1.10 metres. On a pitched roof surface of five by four metres you soon fit ten panels, provided there is no roof window, chimney or vent in the way. On a flat roof we mount the panels on a support structure, which needs spacing so the rows do not shade each other. That means fewer panels per square metre on a flat roof than on a pitched one.

2. Orientation and pitch determine the yield

South gives the highest peak, but an east-west layout gives a flatter daily curve that often fits household use better. The ideal pitch is around 35 degrees. If your roof differs from that it is rarely a problem; it costs a few percent, not tens of percent.

  • A panel measures around 1.70 by 1.10 metres
  • A flat roof needs spacing between the rows
  • Micro-inverters limit shade losses
  • Your daytime use determines the ideal size

3. Shade matters more than people think

A chimney, a dormer or the neighbours' tree can cast shade for a good part of the day. With a single central inverter that drags the whole string down. If we use micro-inverters, the damage is limited to the panel in the shade. On a shaded roof that is nearly always the better choice.

4. Your consumption determines what is sensible

More panels is not always better. We look at your annual consumption in kWh and at when you use electricity. If you work from home, have a heat pump or charge a car, you use more during the day and a larger system pays off sooner. During the survey we calculate this concretely.

In practice this subject belongs with energy advice and led lighting. There you can read how we work and what is possible, or you can request a no-obligation quote straight away.

Tip from the engineer

When in doubt, always ask for a no-obligation advice session. Half an hour of looking on site says more than ten brochures, and you commit to nothing.
