Solar water heaters and heat pumps are often mentioned in the same breath, but they solve different problems. One makes hot water, the other heats your whole home. Which choice is wisest depends on your consumption and your house.
A solar water heater warms water with the sun. Collectors on the roof heat a fluid, which passes its warmth to the water in the storage tank through a heat exchanger. That saves up to 50 percent on hot water costs. Showering, washing up and the washing machine: that is where the gain is. With a combi model your heating water is pre-warmed too.
A heat pump draws warmth from ground, air or groundwater and brings it to your heating system. About 75 percent of the heat needed comes free from the surroundings. So it replaces or relieves your boiler, and in summer it can often cool as well. The saving is therefore mainly in the gas you use for heating.
If you use a lot of hot water, for example in a family with growing children, a solar water heater pays for itself quickly. If your gas bill is high mainly because of heating, a heat pump delivers more. In a well-insulated home with a large roof, the combination of solar panels and a heat pump is often the strongest choice.
Going green can be done step by step. Many customers start with solar panels, then tackle the heating and later add zone control. We take future expansion into account in the design, so you are not locked into today's choice.
