Solar panels on a flat roof: what to look for

AdviceReading time: 4 minutesUpdated: September 2026

We install many solar panels on the flat roofs of homes and business premises in Waalwijk, Tilburg and Drunen. A flat roof gives freedom in layout, but also demands more attention to ballast, spacing and the roof covering itself.

1. South or east-west?

On a flat roof you choose the direction yourself. A south-facing layout gives the highest peak around midday. An east-west layout yields slightly less per panel but spreads output across the day, which suits a household that uses power morning and evening. East-west also often fits more panels on the same roof, because the rows can stand closer together.

2. Ballast and load-bearing capacity

Panels on a flat roof are not drilled through but held in place with ballast. That means extra weight on the structure. On an industrial building that is rarely a problem; on an older extension it sometimes is. We assess this beforehand and, if needed, choose a lighter system or a different layout.

  • East-west spreads output across the day
  • Ballast requires load-bearing capacity
  • Spacing prevents winter shade
  • Check the roof covering beforehand

3. Spacing against shade

Rows of panels on a flat roof need enough spacing, otherwise the front row shades the row behind it in winter. The shallower the angle, the less spacing is needed. That is why we often set panels on a flat roof flatter than the theoretically ideal 35 degrees: it costs a few percent per panel, but more panels fit.

4. Think about roof maintenance

Make sure the roof covering is in good condition before the panels go on. Replacing a roof with panels on it costs unnecessary money. Keep walkways clear so you can reach the drains. We discuss this with you or your roofer beforehand.

In practice this subject belongs with monitoring and maintenance and led lighting. There you can read how we work and what is possible, or you can request a no-obligation quote straight away.

Tip from the engineer

When in doubt, always ask for a no-obligation advice session. Half an hour of looking on site says more than ten brochures, and you commit to nothing.
