Solar panel maintenance: what and how often?

MaintenanceReading time: 4 minutesUpdated: September 2026

Solar panels last for decades and need little attention. Still, there is a difference between low-maintenance and maintenance-free. A system that is never checked quietly delivers less after a few years than it could.

1. What you can follow yourself

With a monitoring system you see daily what your installation is doing. Compare this month's yield with the same month last year; a structural drop is the first signal. With Enphase you see it per panel, so a problem can be traced immediately to one spot on the roof.

2. What we check

During a service we check that the system works correctly: the mounting and ballast, the cabling and connectors, the inverter and the earthing. Where necessary we clean the panels. Dirt, moss and grime cost yield, certainly on a low-pitched roof where rain rinses less effectively.

  • Compare monthly yields year on year
  • Check mounting, cabling and inverter
  • Dirt and moss cost yield
  • Combine it with the heat pump service

3. How often is sensible?

For an average household a check every few years is enough, unless the monitoring shows something sooner. For a commercial roof or a flat-roof system with many trees nearby we advise looking more often. Feel free to combine it with your heat pump service, since the engineer is with you anyway.

In practice this subject belongs with energy advice and solar panels. There you can read how we work and what is possible, or you can request a no-obligation quote straight away.

Tip from the engineer

When in doubt, always ask for a no-obligation advice session. Half an hour of looking on site says more than ten brochures, and you commit to nothing.
