A heat pump is an investment that can last you twenty years, but the price differs a lot per home. That is because the heat pump itself is only part of the story. In this article you read which elements matter and how to estimate the payback time.
The price consists of the unit, the outdoor unit, the pipework, the electrical connection, the controls and the commissioning afterwards. With a hybrid set-up there is also the link to your existing boiler. If you go fully electric, the distribution system is decisive: radiators that have to work at low temperature are sometimes too small and need replacing.
A hybrid heat pump is considerably cheaper because you keep the boiler and the distribution system usually stays as it is. It covers a large part of the year's heat demand and lets the boiler step in when it is really cold. Going fully electric asks a larger investment, but takes gas out of the equation altogether.
National subsidy is available for heat pumps. The amount depends on the type and capacity. During the advice session we explain which scheme applies in your case and where to apply. Always include the subsidy when calculating the payback time.
Look at last year's gas consumption and work out what you save from it. Subtract the extra electricity costs, then divide the net investment by the annual benefit. In a well-insulated home with a hybrid set-up that often comes out at seven to ten years; in a poorly insulated home, insulating first is the better investment.
